Fun & Frugal Fall Activities
Fall is by far my favorite time of year. The transition from sundresses and flip flops to oversized scarves, sweaters and boots is in full effect. Fall flavors are making their reappearance and the leaves are turning their beautiful shades of orange, red and yellow.
There are certain things I look forward to the most as fall approaches. While there are many things you can do in the fall, I’ve listed some of my favorite frugal fall activities below. Enjoy!
Every year I like to relive my childhood by going to a pumpkin patch and picking out the perfect orange pumpkin to take home and carve. Best of all, I save the pumpkin seeds and bake them! Super easy to make and delicious as well! –And yes, that is Elmo for all of you wondering ;) For a list of pumpkin patches in Iowa, check out http://www.pumpkinpatchesandmore.org/IApne.php.
Take a Look at the Leaves
Ever since I was little, I have loved going for a walk or taking a ride in the car to look at the fall leaves! There is something soothing about the fresh fall air and the vibrant fall colors. To this day I love raking leaves in the fall. Sure it’s a chore, but there’s something fun about it. The sound of the leaves crunching as you walk through your yard is an oddly calming sound!
It wouldn’t be fall without a trip to the apple orchard. I love going to Honey Creek Acres in Swisher, IA and picking apples right from the tree! You can find an apple orchard near you at http://www.orangepippin.com/orchards/united-states/iowa!
Coffee, bread, pie, candles… you name it, I love all things pumpkin. Check out Pinterest for some fun, delicious and creative pumpkin recipes. I promise you won’t be disappointed!
DIY Halloween Costumes!
The number of people who consider Halloween their favorite holiday seems to be growing rapidly. Perhaps it’s because it brings out the child in us, or perhaps it’s simply that we love the scary movies and haunted houses. Whatever the case, Halloween rocks! When I was younger I loved going to the store to pick out a new Halloween costume, but as the years went on, I decided to make my own costume. Not only did it save me money, but it was fun to see what I could actually create! Here are pictures of my Tron costume I made out of duct tape two years ago. Yes I said it, duct tape!
Last but not least, to help me get into the Halloween spirit I thought it would be fun to make some Halloween appetizers! Here is a picture of some “Mummy Dogs” I made last year. Nothing like bringing back pigs in a blanket as an adult!
